American's favorite European destination in 2012 is...Castelo de Vide
So according to the american voters in the Washington Post their favorite European destination is Castelo de Vide, in Alentejo, Portugal!
I was like: Castelo de Vide? where the hell is that place? Even I didn't know (I don't really go out from Lisbon, I just go to Algarve in summer and that's it) and I've never been there (but I'm going definetly). So Castelo de Vide is in Alentejo, a rural and abandoned region of Portugal whose most inhabitants live by the coastline...so it's the interior, it's desertified even because when we joined the club of Europe our pals said for us to destroy our agriculture and mines...Alentejo was a very productive place now it's nothing, there's no jobs...what a great agreement we did with our european fellows, han? (I'm euroceptic, I like Europe but don't agree with this Europe).
Castelo de Vide is a medieval village lost in the mists of history and it was elected american's favorite Europe summer destination with an astonishing 25554 votes from the Washington Post readers being ahead of well known places in Europe like the island of Ios in Greece in 2nd place (1260 votes), Prague in 3rd place (283 votes), Paris in 4th place (with 213 votes!) Athens in 5th place (with 147 votes), Scotland in 6th place (with 133 votes) and Amsterdan (with 118 votes!).
So why? I really don't know but it's flattering, a portuguese journalist said that's because of wines from Castelo de Vide.
Anyway if you go in there and don't see any life, no people and closed stores and abandoned fertile farmland I want you to know that's because we exterminated the industry in Portugal 'cause our european fellows said that we should do so and they even paid our farmers for not produce, how generous of them! I wonder with what intentions they wanted so badly to screw our weak but self sustainable economy that they even paid us to do so! As the result we're endebted and we must pay them for our sins! What a big deal!
And there's more if you wanna know in our coastline who fishes here are big japanese, french and spanish fishery companies. Makes sense, han? we cannot fish in our sea and we cannot plant our food! Good deal!
I get so revolted when I see portuguese people from little fisherman's companies or humble farmers crying on TV 'cause law don't allow them to fish on their sea or plant their seeds on their lands...what kind of stupid country is this? And then you hear the nordics (specially germans) saying: "people from south, in Portugal? they're lazy they don't like working". I get so revolted!
Once again this isonly possible when people don't get revolted with this corrupted portuguese government who only cares about winning their cash doing this ruinous business for portuguese people and winning a "respectful" and powerful position in Europe like Durão Barroso (the president of European Union), that guy only did shit here but still there, he's a good puppet and European leaders like having a stupid puppet in power that agrees no matter what in making what they want to do.
But this has nothing to do with spending a summer vacation in Castelo de Vide I know I'm just telling you what is really is this European disunion and why Portugal is screwed!
If you go to Castelo de Vide have a great holiday there and go see the rest of Portugal and Europe too...it's wonderful and full of History!
